Callahan, Harry M.
Biography
Harry Callahan (b. 1912 - d. 1999), a self-taught photographer who became internationally recognized was hired by László Moholy-Nagy in 1946 to teach photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago. In 1949, the Department of Photography was formed and Callahan was appointed its head. Callahan hired Aaron Siskind to assist him in the Department, and together they taught at ID until 1961 when Callahan joined the faculty at Rhode Island School of Design. An exhibit of Callahan's work opened at the National Gallery of Art in 1994 and toured nationally. Callahan was awarded the 1997 National Medal of the Arts, one of the highest honors for an artist.
