Biography

Arthur Siegel (1913-1978) attended the New Bauhaus on scholarship from 1937-1938. Siegel was a photographer for the Farm Security Administration (1937-1942), Office of War Information (1942-1944), and the U.S. Army Air Corps (1944-1946). From 1946-1949 Seigel was the Head of Photography at the Institute of Design, and Professor of Photography from 1949-1954, 1965-1978 and department Chair from 1971-1978. Siegel's areas of specialization include 35 mm color photography, photojournalism, and Chicago architectural photography.

Description of the Collection Film (color and sound) of Illinois Institute of Technology campus and classroom scenes with shots of Chicago. Per Sharp, the film was made ca. 1975, most likely produced at the request of the President's Office. Credits read, "A Film by Charles Dee Sharp, Produced at ID." Description of the Collection

Twenty-three video interviews with Institute of Design alumni regarding their experiences in the photography program. The interviewees discuss fellow students and instructors such as Arthur Siegel, Aaron Siskind, Garry Winogrand, Harry Callahan, Nathan Lerner, Frederick Sommer, and others. The interviews were recorded on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at the Stephen Daiter Gallery, Chicago, IL. The collection includes 23 interviews, 3 essays, 3 photographs and a guestbook.
