Henry's Work for Don Clever Design and Murals, 1954-1955
Scope and Contents
Content description from Suzanne Rahn's inventory of the archive: Working for Don Clever Design & Murals (1950s). Very little documentation survives from this period, because MH (like the several other artists employed by Clever) was barred from signing her own name to her work. One interesting item, however, is this sample brochure publicizing Mendocino County, which so impressed Design and Advertising teacher Wolfgang Lederer that he wrote the attached note asking Clever for additional copies to show his students. MH kept this copy of it (in fact she may have hand-copied it herself) and it may have encouraged her to strike out on her own as a commercial artist, as she did in the late 50s. There is also a 1954 letter from Old St. Mary's Church in San Francisco, thanking her for a letterhead design done while working for Don Clever, and a similar letter from The Company of the Golden Hind (1955, Berkeley), thanking her for a poster design (done free?).
