Mecca Building, 1950-1998
Materials discussing and illustrating The Mecca (aka Mecca Flats), a large apartment complex at 34th and Dearborn, built in the early 1890s and demolished in early 1952 to make way for Crown Hall. Materials include: 1) Clipped pages of an article about the Mecca from Harper's Magazine of December 1950, called "The Strangest Place in Chicago" and documenting the complex in its final months of existence; 2) A photocopied article from Life Magazine under date November 19, 1951, "The Mecca: Chicago's Showiest Apartment Has Given Up all but the Ghost"; 3) A B&W 8" x 10" photo of the interior of the Mecca, taken in 1951; 4) A copy of a program from IIT's May 3, 1990 "Centennial Jazz Celebration," which includes a description of the Mecca Flats Building; 5) A copy of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians (or JSAH) from December 1998, including an article on "Chicago's Mecca Flat Blues."
