Biographical / Historical
Before the Institute of Design became exclusively a graduate school in 1999, it offered undergraduate degree concentrations in industrial design, product design, visual design, and photography. Though most of the papers in this subseries fall into one of these categories, Gary Baker, 1972 (Box 14, Folder 4) and Jeffrey Marienthal, 1973 (Box 21, Folder 7) completed their theses in film animation. Maria Echavarria, 1982 (Box 31, Folder 5) wrote the only thesis on visual communications. The industrial design program was phased out in the 1970s, but the product design program produced similar output. Undergraduates wrote a paper thesis sometimes accompanied by slides, photographs, a slide show narrative, and/or an audio component. The materials in this series range from 1963-1994 and are arranged alphabetically by last name for each year. It was not until the late 1960s that students began to add these audio and visual components. Papers, slides, and photographs make up the bulk of this subseries; five boxes of accompanying audio components (cassettes and reel to reel tape) fall at the end of this series.
General
One box, Peter Steinkemp's thesis, can be found in Box 163, away from the other undergraduate theses.
