Biographical Note
Harry Callahan (1912-1999), a self-taught photographer who became internationally recognized was hired by Laszlo Moholy-Nagy in 1946 to teach photography at the Institute of Design (Chicago). In 1949 the Department of Photography was formed and Callahan was appointed its head. Callahan hired Aaron Siskind to assist him in the Department, and together they taught at ID until 1961 when Callahan left to join the faculty at Rhode Island School of Design. (Siskind became department head at ID.) Callahan was considered one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century, and he did much of his work in Chicago. An exhibit of his work opened at the National Gallery of Art in 1994 and toured nationally. Callahan was awarded the 1997 National Medal of the Arts, on e of the highest honors for an artist.
