Biographical Note
In 1996, a major redesign of the IIT campus landscape was recommended as part of the campus master plan developed by IIT trustee Dirk Lohan, Mies's grandson. Peter Lindsay Schaudt Landscape Architecture, Inc. of Chicago, and Michael van Valkenburgh Associates of Cambridge, Massachusetts were contracted in 1997 to execute a landscape master plan for the main campus; the plan was adopted in 1998. Peter Lindsay Schaudt was then engaged to begin the execution of the plan. The first stages (now complete) included creating a new streetscape/landscape and forestation of parkways and medians along State St. and 33rd St. as they run through the campus (12 acres, completer 2000) (this work was funded by the City of Chicago) and a terraced field to the north of Crown Hall (2 acres, completed 2001). The Galvin Pritzker Grove at the SW corner of State and 33rd Streets was added to the project in early 2003. Later work completed by Peter Lindsay Schaudt includes the yard in front of Main Building, the park-like setting immediately to the east, and parking areas along Federal Street (2.25 acres, completed 2002). Landscaping around State Street Village (student housing) was completed in 2003 (1 acre). The next phase of work to be done by Schaudt (as of Nov. 2005) includes the grounds around S. R. Crown Hall, the IIT Tower building, and the IIT Research Park. A separate landscape design project for the areas surrounding the McCormick Tribune Campus Center, developed by Campus Center Architect Rem Koolhaas, was completed in 2003-2005.
