McCormick Tribune Campus Center videos, 2003
Video tapes of four events surrounding dedication and opening of the McCormick Tribune Campus Center on the campus of Illinois Institute of Technology. All are raw footage. Events as follows: Ribbon Cutting (9/30/2003), Dedication (9/30/2003), Faculty/staff/student welcoming ceremony (10/3/2003), and lecture by architect Rem Koolhaas (10/4/2003). Collection also includes dvd surrogate which consists of
the Dedication, Ribbon Cutting, and Welcoming Ceremony.
Detailed event description as follows:
Ribbon Cutting: President Lew Collens reviews the Driehaus International Design Competition challenge, and recognizes major funders: McCormick Tribune Foundation, Robert Galvin and Robert Pritzker, Gov. George Ryan's Illinois First program, and Frank Kruesi for Chicago Transit Authority. Mayor Richard Daley comments graciously acknowledging IIT's role in South Side development. Dick Behrenhausen, president and CEO of the McCormick Tribune Foundation, comments about the role of the Foundation. Ribbon cutting with dignitaries. 14 min.
Dedication Program: Welcome by Jim Thompson, chair of Mies van der Rohe Society. Comments by Lew Collens and Dick Behrenhausen. Architect Rem Koolhaas comments on Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and recognizes three individuals who contributed to the project: Jeffrey Johnson (OMA), Mark Shendel, and Michael Rock (2x4) Event hosted by Mies van der Rohe Society. David Baker and Donna Robertson also appear in the background of the video. 9 min.
Welcoming Ceremony: President Lew Collens recognizes funding sources and names individuals on faculty and staff at IIT who served in various "crews"(construction, student services, internet technology, legal, events, business, architectural competition, IPRO, and welcome center) during the project. He presents symbolic card keys to representatives of the staff (L'Argent Humphries), faculty (Phil Troyk), and students (George Mackie Derrick) and a symbolic "official" key to Paul Terzino (the building's manager). 13 min.
Rem Koolhaas lecture: Slide lecture held in Hermann Union Building (not in MTCC) and sponsored as a fund-raiser for Crown Hall renovation. Koolhaas spoke on the topic of utopian architecture in Soviet Union and current utopian forms, and on projects of his architectural firms OMA and AMO. Welcome remarks and introduction by Lew Collens and Donna Robertson. Q & A session includes brief remarks on Mies van der Rohe and the Campus Center. Ca. 75 minuets.
