Scope and Contents
The Building Reference Files collection consists of a mix of primary and secondary source material relating to the buildings and campuses of the Illinois Institute of Technology and its predecessor institutions. These files formerly served as "drop files" where archives staff collected clippings, ephemera, and photographs related to the buildings and campus, and as a result, many of the files consist wholly of secondary material (including photocopies and clippings from university...

Description of the Collection
127 boxes of photographs of Illinois Institute of Technology campus, events, and people. Most photos are presumed to be taken by Communication and Marketing Office for various campus publications. Subjects and photographers are sometimes identified. The photos are in various formats: prints, negatives, and contact sheets, and some slides and transparencies. Most images are in black and white and most date from 1980 and before.

The bulk of the collection consists of real estate materials and IRS filings. Real estate materials concern mortgages held as investments by Armour and Lewis Institutes and Lewis campus properties with values and maintenance expenses, ca 1938. Includes a Plat map of Lewis campus showing buildings and vacant lots, as well as notes, correspondence, insurance values, and legal descriptions of State St. area properties acquired in 1940s.
