Community Development Department information files, Illinois Institute of Technology, 1991-2000
Content Description
Six (6) banker's boxes of information files from IIT's Community Development Department during the early tenure of Associate Vice President Leroy E. Kennedy, 1991-2000. Boxes contain alphabetical files on Bronzeville (Chicago) organizations, individuals and topics under the general heading of "external" (to university operations). The six boxes represent only a fraction of their series of origin (perhaps 25%).

Mindy Pugh of the University Archives & Special Collections unit of the Paul V. Galvin Library received on 9/27/2024 an email from Catherine Gerhard (Director of Operations, Armour College of Engineering, Perlstein Hall, Room 224, 10 W. 33rd Street) alerting her to the existance of hundreds of boxes of historical university records (in file cabinets and banker's boxes) in Perlstein's basement. Gerhard was also serving as Perlstein's building manager and was concerned about such a concentration of paper files presenting a fire hazard. Within days Pugh toured the basement with Gerhard and determined that most of it could be trashed with minimal documentary loss to university history (for example, many of the files were production-related documents for eventual university publications that now survive in end-stage form). However, Pugh also determined that there was a decent amount of valuable administrative files from the highest levels: Board of Trustees minutes and correspondence; University Presidential files (Feldberg, Collens, and Anderson); and records of the IIT Department of Community Development from the early tenure of Leroy K. Kennedy. In the months following, Pugh retrieved many of the BoT, Presidential. and Community Development files and brought thyem to UASC storage in Galvin Library. This accession constitutes the Community Development portion.
