Raymond Roberts papers, 1944-1997
This collection includes a photograph and a book, Survivors of the Leopoldville Disaster. The photograph, dated approximately 1944, depicts John C. DeKlyen and two other Illinois Institute of Technology students, Marty Black and Bob Natkin. Survivors of the Leopoldville Disaster (148 pp) by Raymond R. Roberts (Three Oaks Michigan: Bear Press Printing; 1997) consists of stories about the disaster told by survivors to the author 45 years after the events. The author dedicated the book to two of his friends who died in the shipwreck, John C. DeKlyen and Lewis A. Smith, who were students at IIT before going on active duty. Abstract
The transport ship Leopoldville was sunk by torpedoes in the English Channel on Christmas Eve, 1944, killing 800 American soldiers, among them an IIT alumnus John C. DeKlyen. This collection includes a photo of DeKlyen and a book about the Leopoldville.
