S. R. Crown Hall collection, 1956-2005
This collection contains publications and ephemera realted to or featuring S.R. Crown Hall, including the following: Dedication ceremonies program booklet, April 30, 1956 (8 pages), Booklet titled Preliminary Staff Summary of Information (submitted to the Commission on Chicago Landmarks in October 1996 to designate S. R. Crown Hall as a local landmark), menu from the Wabash Railroad (which ran past the IIT campus) with image of Crown Hall on the front (ca. 1956), Historic Illinois, Vol. 24, No. 4, Dec. 2001, with cover article "Mies van der Rohe's Crowning Achievement" by Douglas Gilbert, CD (master copy) containing scanned images of Crown Hall from the IIT Archives, color photocopy of three-page article "Aspetti de un edificio di Mies van der Rohe, Crown Hall" from Domus (Vol. 346, pp. 1 - 3; Sept. 1958), souvenir program from "unwrapping" of Crown Hall after exterior renovation, August 25, 2005. Oversize/artifactual items include the sledgehammer (spray painted gold) and a parking sign related to the May 17, 2005 Smash Bash event to kick off the exterior renovation of Crown Hall (nicks in the gold on the sledgehammer are from the ceremonial breaking of the first plate glass window). Also included is a Viewmaster and reel, titled "S. R. Crown Hall Celebrating 50 Years," a souvenir of the August 25, 2005 event.
