Identifier: 032.04.06

Transcripts of two interviews conducted under the auspices of The Mies van der Rohe Society at Illinois Institute of Technology. Dirk Lohan, IIT Trustee and grandson of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, was interviewed by Betsy Hughes and Phil Rozen of IIT and Christopher Robling of Jayne Thompson and Associates. Lohan comments on Mies, modernism, IIT's master plans (Mies' plan of the 1940s and Lohan's plan of the 1990s), McCormick Tribune Campus Center designed by Rem Koolhaas and State Street Village designed by Helmut Jahn. Includes significant comment about the IIT Board of Trustees' decision ca. 1993 (especially Robert (Bob) Galvin) to keep the university at its historic South State St. location and to renovate the campus and buildings. Also comments on Lohan's Heald Award presentation. October 2002; 9 pages. "My Father and Mies van der Rohe: An Interview with Bennett Greenwald" Bennett Greenwald, son of Herbert "Squiff" Greenwald who developed several of Mies' commercial building projects, is interviewed by Kevin Harrington of IIT. Greenwald comments on his father projects both with Mies and others, his philosophy toward real estate development, and his relationship with Mies. Bennett, who met Mies on frequent occasions, includes first-person remarks about Mies with some very quotable comments and observations. January 24, 2005; 7 pages and 1 addenda page.
