16 mm B&W silent film (3 minutes long) of the move of the Crerar Library collection from its Chicago Loop location to the campus of Illinois Institute of Technology in September 14, 1962 by (Jack) Hallett & Sons Movers. Shows images of trucks being loaded, exterior of Crerar Kemper Library (IIT's campus),and movers replacing shelves loaded with books on the uprights. Two additional vintage film roles believed to be the same film were added to this collection 10/23/2003 (previously identified as 1998.075). Per information on the film cans, they are: 1) Move of Crerar Library/finished print/B & W/silent/negative/on leader: "Crerar Move Clip"; 3½" d.; ca. 5 min.; 9/14/62; Allieo." 2) Move of Crerar Library; work print; B&W; silent; Negative; 9/14/1962; on leader: "Crerar Move TV Clip"; 3½" d.; ca. 5 min. Biographical Note

The John Crerar Library, a specialized science and mathematics library founded in the 1890s by the will of John Crerar was located in Chicago's loop at 86 E. Randolph St. It relocated to Illinois Institute of Technology's State Street campus in 1962 in a building erected to house the Crerar Library and IIT's Kemper Library. The libraries maintained separate collections. IIT terminated its agreement with Crerar (Dec. 31, 1984) and Crerar Library moved to The University of Chicago.

Provenance

The original item, donated by Jack Hallett, is what appears to be the 16 mm film; there are no marking on the film canister or leader tape. On Oct. 28, 2003, two additional vintage film roles believed to be the same film were added to this collection. (They had previously been identified as 1998.75.) Per information on the film cans, they are: 1) Move of Crerar Library/finished print/B & W/silent/negative/on leader: "Crerar Move Clip"/3½" d./ca. 5 min./9/14/62/Allieo." 2) Move of Crerar Library/work print/B & W/silent/Negative/9/14/1962/on leader: "Crerar Move TV Clip"/3½" d./ca. 5 min. VHS transfer from original film was done by Galvin Library.
