Mies van der Rohe Memorial collection, 1969-1970

 Collection
Identifier: 006.06.13

The collection consists of two unrelated audio recordings and two documents as follows: 1) A recording of the Mies Memorial program held in S. R. Crown Hall on Oct. 25, 1969 following the death of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe on Aug. 16, 1969. The recording includes solo cello performances by Janos Starker and remarks by James Johnson Sweeney. First 4:15 minutes are Janos Starker playing a Bach cello solo. 4:15 - 18:50 are James Johnson Sweeney delivering the memorial. 18:50 - 34:25 are Starker playing cello. The balance of the recording is someone doing a sound check in Crown Hall. 2) Document related to this recording is a copy of the printed program for the memorial. (See also, a related document in 1998.033/Biographical Files/Mies/Folder 1; "Tribute to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe".) 3) A recording of the faculty meeting of the IIT School of Architecture and Planning held April 10, 1970. The meeting was opened with an unidentified person (possibly George Danforth, chairman of Architecture or Dr. Antonis Tritsis) reading the statement by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe (as director of the Armour Institute of Technology department of architecture) published in the 1939-1940 AIT Bulletin (academic catalog) identifying the philosophy and content of the 5-year architecture course. A discussion follows concerning primarily the current (i.e., the 1970) freshman year architecture program curriculum and possible changes. Speakers heard on the recording include professors David C. Sharpe, Joseph (Fijikawa?), Al Roupp, Bielenand, Peter Beltemacchi, Brenner, Arthur Takeuchi, Hannaford, Johnson, Kimm, and perhaps others. [Faculty members not present at the meeting were Myron Goldsmith, Dr. Antonis Tritsis and Dr. Willfire.] A note found in the box with the tape reads "Reel # 1...con[tinued] on Reel # 2." Only reel # 1 was received. 4) Document related to this recording as apparently the typed transcript of the taped recording with a subsequent conversation as captured on the (missing) "Reels 2 and 3" (as identified on the transcript pages). However, there is a date discrepancy as the transcript pages show April 23, 1970 and April 28, 1970 (vs. April 10, 1970 identified on the audio recording).
