 Collection
Identifier: 038.01.09

Papers of Alain Findeli, Professor of Industrial Design at the University of Montreal (retired 2007), consisting of research files and correspondence amassed in support of his doctoral dissertation, "Du Bauhaus a Chicago: Les Annees d'enseignement de Laszlo Moholy-Nagy" ("From Bauhaus to Chicago: Laszlo Moholy-Nagy's Teaching Years") (1989, University of Paris). This collection includes a copy of Findeli's dissertation. Other primary materials (in copied form) include a copy of Lloyd C. Engelbrecht's 1973 University of Chicago dissertation, "Origins of the Bauhaus Movement in Chicago," as well as articles and works authored by Moholy-Nagy. Also present is Findeli's incoming and outgoing correspondence with fellow academics and research institutions regarding his dissertation work, 1982-1992. This includes correspondence with Terry Suhre, who curated the exhibit "Moholy-Nagy: A new vision for Chicago" at the Illinois State Museum in 1990-91. Suhre provided Findeli with photocopies of correspondence he had recently received from alumni of the New Bauhaus and School of Design. Secondary materials include articles on Moholy-Nagy, Frank Lloyd Wright, R. Buckminster Fuller, and other instructors at the original Bauhaus, the New Bauhaus and at the School of Design. It also includes articles on the impact of the Bauhaus on graphic design, photography, painting, weaving, and advertising (both in Europe and in the U.S.), articles on the Hungary of Moholy-Nagy's youth, photocopies of letters written by Moholy-Nagy during the period of the New Bauhaus/School of Design (late 1930s-1946), photocopies of letters written by Walter Paepcke and Walter Gropius in the same period, materials on Mills College (Oakland, California), where Moholy-Nagy taught in 1940, and photocopies of School of Design catalogs, course descriptions and outlines.
